2026 World Cup Is Almost Here! Here Are My Favorite World Cup GIFs

As a football fan, every World Cup gives me a reason to revisit some of the greatest moments in football history.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, I’ve been collecting classic World Cup GIFs again. Some of them still give me chills no matter how many times I watch them.

Here are a few of my all-time favorites:

:soccer_ball: Maradona’s legendary solo goal vs England (1986)
The way he dribbled through the entire defense still looks unreal today.

:soccer_ball: Van Persie’s flying header vs Spain (2014)
Probably one of the most iconic headers ever scored in a World Cup.

:soccer_ball: James Rodríguez’s volley vs Uruguay (2014)
That chest control and finish… pure football art.

:soccer_ball: Messi’s goal against Mexico (2022)
A huge moment that helped Argentina stay alive in the tournament.

:soccer_ball: Argentina lifting the trophy (2022)
Not technically a goal moment, but one of the most emotional GIFs I keep sharing whenever football discussions start.

The problem is that many classic World Cup GIFs were created from old footage, and some of them look pretty rough today. A lot of the older clips are blurry, compressed, or full of noise, especially when shared multiple times across social media.

A few weeks ago I started experimenting with HitPaw VikPea to see if I could improve some of these GIFs.

What I tried

  1. Imported a GIF into VikPea

  2. Chose the General Restoration Model

  3. Upscaled the footage to a higher resolution

  4. Exported and recreated the GIF

The difference was surprisingly noticeable

:white_check_mark: Sharper player faces

:white_check_mark: Cleaner stadium details

:white_check_mark: Less compression noise

:white_check_mark: Better clarity during fast movements

The improvement was especially obvious on older footage from the 1980s and 1990s, where details that were previously hard to see became much clearer.

I’ve also been using enhanced GIFs in football group chats and on X during live matches. They simply look better when everyone is reacting to goals, VAR drama, missed penalties, and celebration moments. Football GIFs have basically become part of how fans communicate during tournaments now.
