Fixing a Dark, Noisy Cat Video Shot at Night with HitPaw VikPea 🐈

My cat is most active at night (typical cat behavior :cat_with_wry_smile:), and I recorded this video of her playing near the window quite a long time ago. Back then, the lighting conditions were awful and the camera struggled in low light.

The video had:

● Heavy noise and grain

● Lost fur detail in dark areas

● Blurry edges around the face

● Overall muddy and low-quality look

It didn’t capture her fluffy fur or bright eyes at all. I used HitPaw VikPea to enhance it, and the difference was huge β€” cleaner image, less noise, and much clearer details.

Workflow (How I enhanced the low-light cat video)

Here’s exactly what I did:

1. Open HitPaw VikPea

2. Import the dark cat video

3. Select the Professional Denoise Model

4. Set resolution to 4K

5. Keep Detail Recovery enabled

6. Click Preview to check the improvement

7. Export the enhanced video

The preview immediately showed less grain, and my cat’s face became much clearer β€” especially around the eyes and whiskers.

Recommended Settings (Best for dark / night cat videos :night_with_stars::paw_prints:)

Model: Professional Denoise Model

Resolution: 4K

Detail Recovery: Enabled

Denoise: Automatic (built into the model)

Export format: MP4 (H.264)

Why this works well for low-light cat footage:

● :crescent_moon: Removes night-time noise and grain without destroying details

● Restores fur texture, especially in darker areas

● :eye: Improves visibility of eyes and facial features

● :sparkles: Makes the video look cleaner and more modern

Cats often have dark fur or move in shadow, and this model helps recover those hidden details.

Optional tip:

If the video is extremely dark and low quality, always choose 4K upscale β€” it gives the AI more information to reconstruct details.

Common Issues & Fixes (Night cat video specific)

Problem: The video still looks noisy

Fix:

Make sure you’re using the Professional Denoise Model not Portrait Restoration Model. The General model handles full-frame noise better, especially for fur and dark scenes.

Problem: My black cat still blends into the background :black_cat:

Fix:

Use 4K upscale with Detail Recovery enabled. This helps separate fur edges from the dark background.

Problem: Some areas look smoother but slightly soft

Fix:

This is normal when removing heavy noise. You can keep Detail Recovery enabled to balance sharpness and noise reduction.

Problem: Night videos look worse than daytime videos

Fix:

Low-light footage naturally has less information, but AI enhancement significantly improves clarity, reduces grain, and restores visible details.

Result (Biggest improvements I saw :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes:)

After enhancement:

● Noise was greatly reduced

● Fur became visible instead of muddy

● Eyes looked clearer and brighter

● Overall video looked cleaner and more usable

It finally looked like a proper night video instead of a grainy mess.

If your cat only does cute things at night (as most cats do :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:), HitPaw VikPea can make those videos look dramatically better and clearer.
