If you edit videos for multiple platforms like I do, you probably know the struggle of constantly switching between widescreen YouTube edits, square Instagram posts, and vertical TikTok or Reels formats.
Last week, I was working on a family project (a really warm clip of a mom holding her baby under soft fairy lights—you’ll see it in the screenshots below). I originally built everything in a standard 1080p Final Cut Pro timeline, but halfway through, the client asked for three different outputs: a vertical version for Instagram Reels, a clean 4K master, and the original edit preserved.
At first, I honestly thought I would have to rebuild the project from scratch. But I eventually figured out a workflow in Final Cut Pro that lets you change resolution without breaking your edits. Even better, I also solved the annoying blur and pixelation problem that usually shows up when you upscale older footage.

Part 1. Changing Resolution in Final Cut Pro Without Losing Your Edit
One thing I didn’t realize early on is that Final Cut Pro is actually very flexible with project dimensions. When you change resolution, it automatically adjusts the timeline layout, so your edits, transitions, and audio stay intact.
The only limitation I ran into is that frame rate is locked once you start editing, so that still needs to be decided at the beginning.
Step 1. Open Project Settings
Instead of working inside the timeline, go to the Browser panel. Select your project, then open the Info Inspector on the right side and click the blue Modify button.
Step 2. Adjust Resolution Settings
A settings window will pop up. Under the Video dropdown, you can switch between presets like 1080p, 4K UHD, or choose Custom if you want something like vertical 9:16 for TikTok or Reels.
Step 3. Fix Cropping and Black Bars
When I converted my widescreen footage into a vertical format, black bars appeared immediately. This is where most people get stuck, but the fix is simple:

Select the clips in the timeline

Scroll to Spatial Conform

Change Fit to Fill

Use Transform controls (Position X and Y) to reframe the subject properly
Once I adjusted framing, the vertical version looked completely natural.
Part 2. The Real Problem: Upscaling Quality Loss
Here’s the part that surprised me.
Final Cut Pro handles resolution changes well, but it doesn’t actually improve image quality. So when I took older 1080p footage and stretched it into a 4K timeline, everything looked soft and slightly pixelated.
At that point, I realized the issue wasn’t the project settings, it was the source footage itself.

After exporting, I brought the enhanced clips back into Final Cut Pro. This time, I could freely crop and reframe between vertical, square, and widescreen without the image falling apart.
Part 3. What I Learned From This Workflow
After going through this project, I realized something simple but important:
Changing resolution in Final Cut Pro is not the hard part. The real challenge is making sure your footage still looks good after you change it.
