I recently worked on a project where I needed to turn some older, low-resolution footage into sharper, high-quality videos. I wanted to share my experience using DaVinci Resolve and an alternative AI-powered tool, HitPaw VikPea, so anyone in the community can benefit.
Step 1: Trying DaVinci Resolve Video Upscaling
DaVinci Resolve is amazing for video editing, color grading, and post-production—but did you know it also has upscaling tools?
I experimented with two main methods:
Method A: Timeline Resolution (Free Version)
1. Open your project or create a new one.
2. Go to Master Settings → set timeline resolution to 1080p or 4K.
3. Drag your clip to the timeline.
4. In Inspector, set Scaling → Scale full frame with crop.
5. Export the video.
Tip: This method is free, but the results depend heavily on your source footage.
Method B: Super Scale (Studio Version)
For higher quality, I used Super Scale, which is AI-enhanced:
1. Import the clip into the Media Pool.
2. Create a 4K timeline (3840 Ă— 2160).
3. Drag the clip onto the timeline.
4. Right-click → Clip Attributes → set Super Scale factor (2x, 4x, or 6x).
5. Adjust Sharpness and Noise Reduction.
6. Export your video.
Outcome: Super Scale gave much sharper results, especially for older clips—but it does require the Studio version.
Step 2: Using HitPaw VikPea for AI-Powered Upscaling
