What are the best settings for watching videos in 240p or 360p?

I ran into this problem recently—had to watch some old videos that were only available in 240p/360p, and they looked really rough (blurry faces, blocky artifacts, etc.). I tried tweaking a bunch of settings to make them more watchable. Sharing what actually worked for me

Best Settings for Watching 240p / 360p Videos

1. Don’t Watch Fullscreen

This made the biggest difference.

  • Keep the player at small or medium size

  • Fullscreen stretches pixels → makes blur way worse

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Smaller window = sharper perceived quality

2. Choose 360p Over 240p (If Available)

  • 360p is noticeably more watchable

  • 240p should be a last resort

3. Adjust Display Settings (Subtle Tweaks)

On my monitor, these helped:

  • Sharpness: Slight increase

  • Contrast: +5–10%

  • Noise reduction: ON (if available)

:warning: Don’t overdo sharpness—it can make things look unnatural.

4. Keep Playback Speed at 1.0x

  • Faster speeds make compression artifacts more noticeable

  • Especially bad on 240p

Reality Check

Even with all these tweaks:

  • 240p = still very blurry

  • 360p = watchable, but not “clear”

At some point, I realized settings can only go so far…

Trying AI Enhancement (Game Changer for Me)

I decided to test an AI enhancer: HitPaw VikPea

Honestly, I didn’t expect much—but the difference was pretty obvious, especially on faces.

:cross_mark: Traditional Upscaling

  • Simply enlarges pixels (like zooming in)

  • Result = blurry, bigger mess

:white_check_mark: AI Enhancement

  • Uses trained models to predict missing details

  • Reconstructs:

    • Facial features

    • Edges

    • Textures

  • Reduces:

    • Noise

    • Compression artifacts

:backhand_index_pointing_right: It’s more like “rebuilding” the image rather than stretching it.

I tried enhancing a 240p clip:

Before:

  • Blurry face

  • Blocky background

  • No detail in hair/eyes

After AI enhancement:

  • Face became recognizable

  • Edges cleaner

  • Less noise and compression artifacts

Not perfect, but way more watchable.

How I Used VikPea (Super Simple)

Here’s exactly what I did:

  1. Open HitPaw VikPea

  2. Import the low-quality video (240p/360p)

  3. Choose an AI model:

    • General model → for overall quality

    • Portrait model → best for people videos

  4. Select output resolution (1080p)

  5. Click Preview to compare before/after

  6. Export the enhanced video

From my experience, tools like VikPea don’t magically turn 240p into true HD—but they do make it significantly easier to watch.
