Hey everyone! Like many of you in this community, I’ve spent the past couple of terms dealing with awful lecture recording quality. As a TA running online workshops, my biggest headache was always the cloud recordings exported from Zoom. By the time the web conferencing software compressed my screen shares, my carefully designed slides turned into a pixelated mess. Students were constantly messaging me because they couldn’t read equations or code snippets on their screens.
I decided to test out HitPaw VikPea to see if AI upscaling could actually save these compressed recordings and the results completely blew me away!
The Problem: Compression Fatigue
When you record over Zoom or Google Meet, the platform heavily caps bitrates to save bandwidth. This creates three major issues for presentation videos:

I imported a choppy 720p Zoom recording into HitPaw VikPea and ran a few tests. Here is the simple workflow I used to get crystal-clear 1080p lecture exports:
1. Import Your Recording: Drag and drop your Zoom or Teams export into VikPea.
Open HitPaw VikPea, head to the Video Enhancer tab, and drop your low-res presentation file into the workspace.
2. Select the Right AI Model: Model choice makes a huge difference for slides.
For text-heavy slide decks, select the Sharpen Model or General Model. They specifically target geometric edges and vector elements without distorting character outlines. If your webcam feed needs help, the Portrait Model works wonders on smoothing presenter faces.
3. Export to 1080p or 4K: Preview before rendering the full file.
Set your output resolution to 1080p or 4K. Click Preview to check a few frames—especially slides with small text—and hit Export once you’re happy with the clarity!
Quick Troubleshooting Tips I Learned

If text looks distorted (“hallucinated”): Drop the enhancement intensity slightly or switch from face/portrait modes back to the General Sharpen model.

If file sizes get too large: Export using the H.265 (HEVC) codec and cap your bitrate around 10–15 Mbps. This keeps file sizes manageable for Canvas or Google Drive uploads.
Pro Recording Tip for Next Time
While VikPea is amazing at saving bad recordings, I always recommend recording locally using OBS Studio at 1080p (6000+ Kbps bitrate) whenever possible. High-contrast slides with large sans-serif fonts (24pt+) also give the AI clean edges to work with!
